We have been quietly waiting for the next big news for Big Data and finally the headline has appeared on Enterprise Apps Today,Big Data Open Source App Framework Gets Funded.”  Concurrent is a Big Data application vendor that is a sponsor of the Cascading framework used to build Big Data apps.  Concurrent recently raised $4 million in a Series A funding campaign.  Gary Nakamura, the CEO of Concurrent, said now was the perfect time for the Cascading framework as Big Data applications has grown to 75,000 downloads a month.

Nakamura also pointed out that Hadoop adopters are ready to expand beyond their initial deployments:

’Cascading is really taking off mostly because it’s a simple way to build applications and it obfuscates the complexity of Hadoop,’ Nakamura said.  For Concurrent, the opportunity lies in extending what is available as open source with enterprise offerings. Nakamura did not provide specifics on what the enterprise version of Cascading might include, though he stressed that the core project will always remain open source.

SQL has not been forgotten.  There is an SQL added on top of Cascading called Lingual, but Cascading is mote for general computation so it includes a wider range approach.  Big Data is past its infant stage and now it is growing into a robust adolescent.  Moving right along with the Big Data craze is LucidWorks’ search applications that are built specifically to handle the heavy data nodes.
