The Java runtime scalability company Azul Systems is moving into the search market. According to Consumer Electronics Net, “Azul Zing Delivers Speed And Scalability For NetDocuments Search.” Zing is an Apache Solr-based platform that enhances the open source software’s real-time search and ends application pauses. The main reason for this jump was for NetDocuments to perform better for its users.
Zing is performing better than expected and the improvement process is quite amazing:
After migrating to Apache Solr, NetDocuments’ beta testing revealed long, unpredictable pauses during searches — a direct result of the platform’s underlying Java infrastructure. In fact, the Java platform, or JVM, required pauses of up to a full minute to ‘garbage collect’ unused information in memory. NetDocuments selected Azul’s Zing to eliminate this performance issue and deliver a more consistent and nearly instantaneous search experience for its customers. After a five-minute installation (with no changes required to the application), Zing eliminated all pauses on the first test. In addition, Zing provided faster compilation for increased throughput and a tool for complete visibility into Java applications, enabling NetDocuments’ operations teams to identify and resolve potential problems in a timely manner.
Azul Systems has the mentality that most companies take when they approach open source: use it to improve on services and bring excellent performing software to its clients. LucidWorks is another company that adopted this approach. The difference is it is a commercial solution using strong open source foundations that allow customers the ease and confidence of Apache Solr enhancements and professional technical customizations. LucidWorks is a company that is home to search experts that specialize in Big Data and enterprise systems.
