If you have been following us long enough, you know there is a lot of news about Big Data. There is so much news that not a single Web site or person can keep up with it, says CMS Wire in “Big Data Bits: Featuring Facebook, Apache Giraph, Continuuity, LucidWorks, And Infochimps” documents some of the biggest highlights on this topic. Facebook is offering a new search style by teaming Apache Giraph and GraphLab together. The social media giant had to make some improvements to Giraph but now it can scale a trillion edges. Do not think that Apache Hadoop will disappear, because Facebook needs to process a whole lot more data than other companies, plus it needs a lot of smart people to develop it, and it is not enterprise ready.
Moving onto another Apache project, Lucene/Solr has a new core-committer is the only female in the group. Cassandra Targett is an extremely talented woman and she created the Solr reference guide, plus she updates it after every release.
While Targett did much of this work as an employee of LucidWorks, now that the company has donated the Lucene/Solr documentation to the Community, she’s “volunteering” there. She not only helped get the documentation hosted by Apache but she also pitches in to create documentation when the developers don’t have time. And, it’s worth noting that unlike most Apache committers, Targett doesn’t code. So, maybe the news around Targett is not just that she’s a woman, but that the open source Lucene Solr community has awarded a prestige status to someone whose role is documentation.
You do not hear news like this everyday. Strike a notch for a woman’s capability in the IT world and a new piece of code handling Big Data. Do not forget that LucidWorks has an extraordinary background with Apache Lucene/Solr and its team knows how to streamline search for Big Data.
